A man, a mountain, a pit bull
It was a weekend of very fine documentaries. Saturday we saw She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, which was like watching a movie about our own lives. Yesterday after Bella’s party we saw a film by a brilliant, inspiring unhoused Black man who began filming conversations with other unhoused people while he was living in a tent in the woods. The Throwaways is a warm, richly humane examination of what happens to poor people when wealth is concentrated in the hands of the very few. It addresses the so-called War on Drugs which has resulted in mass incarceration, and it includes an interview with Michelle Alexander, who wrote The New Jim Crow. See these if they show up near you.
Today we unplugged and recharged our souls with a walk around Powell Butte, high above Portland. The rain let up, the fog lifted, and the day was just what we needed. That’s snow-covered Mt. Hood in the distance between the man doing Qigong and his protective pit bull. I'm feeling very lucky and wishing the best for all the people in the blizzard on the east coast of the USA.
