not sure why this got so dark!  
it may have something to do with trying to upgrade to Yosemite and after hours of waiting it tells me that if i do, 'Word' won't work.  
so it looks like a toss up between having the 'thumbnail' option and EXIF data or being able to write letters.....
sometimes i really hate technology.
