Well dressing Tissington

The origins of Well dressing is not really known, but it is thought to be a pagan or Christian thanksgiving for the purity and unending supply of water from the well.
The boards are soaked in the village pond. Local clay is dug and then 'trod' like grapes ub=ntil it is the right consistency, the picture is traced on, and marked with coffee beans and alder cones and filled in with overlapping petals, which are placed on one by one. The dressings are put up on the eve of Ascension Day.
