Sherman

This is the U. S. Coast Guard Cutter Sherman, presently docked at the Fairhaven Shipyards about a mile from my house.  It was scheduled for repairs and maintenance in June for what was originally a 10-week visit.  Obviously, there must have been some complications because it’s still here.  I think it’s an imposing looking vessel with its smart red stripe.  It’s 378 feet long and was originally launched in 1968 so that probably explains why the repairs haven’t been completed yet.  It is, after all, 47 years old so I’m sure it needs some TLC.

I believe it came here after patrolling the southeastern Pacific Ocean where its mission included search and rescue and stopping illicit drug traffic off the coast of Central and South America.
