Tonight we discussed The Narrow Road to the Deep North, 2014 Booker Prizewinner. It's a deeply involving read, harrowing and hopeless in some places, humorous and humane in others. The aftermath of the war for each survivor is beautifully drawn, poignant and affecting. For some the near death experience of life in a PoW camp was the time they felt most alive. Their stories stay with you: I can see it being made into an Oscar winning film
