Black Dog

How can depression be referred to as Black Dog? All the black dogs I've seen and/or know are beautiful most unlike depression I know that too unfortunately.

This dog I didn't know but she wagged her tail and let me rub her tum Her name was Lola I know that as it was on her tag.
