King Protea. Leitz Elmarit 90mm w. Bellows II
On Saturday I made an expedition to our local farm store and , to my delight, found that they had bunches of Protea in stock. This rugged and fleshy blossom is South Africa's national flower and grows in large bushes on mountain slopes. I believe this is a King Protea (Protea cynaroides) if my understanding of Wiki is correct. From time to time I see them in florists here in Boston and, out of a sense of nostalgia for the Old Country, I always buy a bunch. These probably came from Hawaii or Costa Rica, some place warm enough to allow them to flourish.
