Literally. 

Workmen replacing the sewage pipes in St. Thomas's Road in 1964. I shared the original with some older folk several of whom remembered this event and fessed up to stealing pitch from the site and chewing it. Apparently they had been told it whitened your teeth. Seems hard to believe and as I looked at their gummy smiles, I couldn't help but feel that they had been lied to.
