Chicken Rescue!
In a bit of an emergency manoeuvre (or should that be man-oeuf-re) we ended up rescuing 3 battery hens last night - we were supposed to be getting ready for them over the next few days, but they were rescued by a hen-saving volunteer narrowly avoiding an ending in chicken pie or cat food....luckily Sam and the kids had just built the coop, so Boggis, Bunce and Bean arrived, rather confused, late on a Friday night.
They are fabulous, we are all quite smitten with them. They're scratty, hen-pecked wee things, never seen the light of day, never scratched the earth, gobbled a worm or uprooted the grass, until today. They have just looked so happy, exploring their new territory (which is about to get considerably bigger, once we get sorted to move them to the top of the orchard). It was amazing really, to see instinct take over and watch them dig around, unearthing proper food and having some space at last. I am so happy for them! The kids are super excited too, especially as we found our first, huge, warm egg in the straw this morning.
They're all tucked away cosy in their coop now, hopefully protected from any Fantastic Foxes that might be on the prowl. Three cheers for Boggis, Bunce and Bean!
