Colonial roots

Across the cricket pitch you can admire "The Old Spotted Dog", as the Clubhouse of the Royal Selangor Club was affectionately known.   The Club was founded by the British in 1884 with the blessing of Sultan Selangor - hence the "Royal" title.   Nothing to do with Queen Victoria although many members of the British Royal Family have been guests - most recently Prince Edward.  

To its credit, from day one membership was open to Malays as well as ex-pats, unlike some similar institutions in colonial times.  On the other hand, the Long Bar is still a male only area.   Oh dear!

It has reciprocal membership with the Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh, so I had my morning coffee on the verandah.
