Gritfell

As you drive north on the M6 north of Preston your eyes can easily be diverted from the road and drawn to the hills in the east. This is Forest of Bowland a place of wilderness, solid stone built villages and more than a few good pubs. Gritfell is one of the highest points at about 1800ft. It is a mass of jumbled gritstone rocks on the summit. The summit always looks black even on an sunny day. Which today wasn't. If you ever come walking in Bowland despite the modest height of the summits the area is a wilderness of heather and deep peat bogs and has caught out many an ill prepared soul.
