Fort Pickens
Fort Pickens is on the barrier island off Pensacola Florida. With Fort Barracas, it defends the entry to Pensacola Bay and it's Navy yard. Started in 1829, it was named for a South Carolina revolutionary hero. Ft Pickens one of four forts never occupied by the Confederacy during the US civil war. One of the gun batteries is shown here with Pensacola in the background. Atomic bombs, bombers and guided missiles made these forts obsolete after WWII when this and others were abandoned.
