New year's eve storm.
2015 certainly seemed to come in like a lion. This photo was taken at dusk at a beach on Lake Superior. The waves were predicted to be 10' on our shore through the night, and up to 15' on other parts of the lake not too far away. Hope no one was out in a boat that night. The timbers in the front are exposed bits of the remnants of government dock, which was destroyed in the same storm which sank the Edmund Fitzgerald. We now have a salvaged piece of the dock in our living room. Other structures, up and down the eastern shore, were also wrecked by that storm. I wonder when the next one like that will be?
I'm doing a little list of my top few books of 2014. It's by no means exhaustive.
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. A very insightful book about how we look after the elderly when they can no longer completely look after themselves. Read it if you or anyone you know is getting old.
Bad Pharma, and Bad Science, by Ben Goldacre. Another nonfiction. They may enlighten you if you think good science, good judgment and good reporting informs how we approve and think of new medications and alternative medicines.
Among the Islands, Tim Flannery. Neat autobiographical work detailing the author's explorations of remote Pacific islands in search of new mammal species. More exciting than it may sound.
The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets, Simon Singh. Yes, that's the topic. Fun stuff about math in that cartoon.
The Quantum Universe, by Cox and Forshaw. Yes, it sounds heavy, but it reveals again that nothing in our universe is what it seems. It's way more bizarre.
The Luminaries, by Eleanor Catton. Read it if you like very long whodunit! Neat stuff about the New Zealand gold rush.
