Mary Slessor
Today I went to the unveiling of a memorial to Mary Slessor, outside the Steeple Church, on the centenary of her death.
This is what it says -
MARY MITCHELL SLESSOR
2 DECEMBER 1848 – 13 JANUARY 1915
Weaver, missionary, teacher, magistrate
Mary lived in Dundee and worked in Baxter Brothers’ Mill in the city.
Aged 28 she travelled to Calabar, Nigeria than known as
‘The White Man’s Grave’. She challenged the superstitions of tribes,
stopped their barbaric practices and rescued and adopted
twins who were believed to be the work of evil spirits.
Supremely courageous, with endless spirit and energy
- her determination was always to “spread the word” of the Bible.
Mary Slessor will always be remembered
by those whom she helped and loved as ‘Mother of all the Peoples’.
“God plus one is a majority’”
If you want to know more about this amazing woman, find out for yourself!
Earlier - I tried to get from home to church but gave up after an hour stuck in traffic on snowy/icy roads.
Later - called off this evening's meeting at church because of the prospect of more snow and ice. Made the most of the good weather in between, and the last bit of daylight, by going for a run in the snow.
