Energy assessmen

Today we hade a visit by a consultant making an energy assessment of our house. We will use his report to apply for a government grant for renovations.

It was quite interesting to see how he worked. One of the more spectacular parts was how he placed a huge fan in our open front door, covering all open space between the fan and the door frame with airtight fabric. The fan sucked air out of the house. And it was very powerful. Fresh air from the outside was drawn into the house, wherever it is not perfectly tight. You could find minute cracks in the walls, as well as leaking holes where the pluming is coming out through the floor in the washrooms and laundry room. My gosh, our house is leaking like a sieve!

The good news is he could give advice on how to remedy the leaking, and also how to insulate the underside of the house. We have already discussed what should be done with a good contractor. We don't know the costs yet, but we guess we can afford it. It is an investment that will be payed off in the long run by savings on the heating costs.
