The Great Hurricane of 1987

I was reading my new gardening book; this passage reminded me of the Great Storm in the Vicar of Dibley.

And also the Great Vowel Shift of 1450–1750.

And also the Great Storm (Hurricane) of 1987 that Michael Fish infamously said wouldn't happen.  Poor man; will he ever live it down?
