Penicuik House Well

It's only a week until the U3A geology field trip to Shetland!!! In preparation we decided to test the waterproof trousers and, as my everyday boots are coming apart, I was making sure the others were still OK. And where better to try them out but a walk in the Penicuik House policies, where there was rain and mud a-plenty.

Hidden in the trees below the retaining wall we discovered this well. It has seen better days but clearly was once important enough to have a title in Greek and a lengthy inscription in Latin as follows:-

FUNDIT NECTAREUS RIVULUS ISTE TUUS
ET QUOT DELICIAS ETIAM DUM FERCULA NOBIS

The google translation makes little sense so all you scholars out there might shed some light on the meaning.
