Down by the boondocks

I just looked 'boondocks' up and it seems to be the word for a run down part of town. Not really the right word here, by our lovely canal, but I liked the sound of it. You know how you hear certain words over a period of time, and you like them, though not really knowing what they mean. Arcane, anyone?
