Mosses

This time of year, there is nothing much growing in the garden. The leaves have gone soggy, the grass is hibernating, and any flowers clinging onto the hydrangeas have turned to brown. However, there is one plant that is on the march and that is the moss. Mosses are everywhere in the soggy grey environment that is Seattle right now. Mosses are the green slime on the sidewalks, the patina on the metal roof and they are slowly devouring the wood fence.

I recently read The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert about a young woman who becomes a moss scholar. Of all things! I started appreciating the moss in the environment more after reading this book.
