Big Idea

This bridge and building, The Big Idea, in Irvine opened in April 2000 as an Inventor Centre.  It soon ran into financial trouble with only 50,000 of the 70,000 visitors required to break even.  Closure came in September 2003.  The bridge was designed to slide open to allow large vessels to enter the harbour.  It is now locked in the open position cutting off access to the Ardeer Peninsula from the harbour.

There have been various rumours since 2008 regarding a possible golf course and new marina but as yet nothing has come of it.
