Sgt Dan

This building has had a big impact on my life.
My parents met there.
My husband's first job was there.
My uncle would take me to work with him there when I stayed during the school holidays. He would set me up in his office with a sheet of paper, pencil and compass and I would happily sit and draw patterns for hours.
The boy (Sgt Dan) on the outside of the building in his boy scout uniform was made by my uncle.

"This factory was the home of Fleming’s Creamoata, an oatmeal porridge that was the staple breakfast for thousands of New Zealand children for much of the 20th century. The Sergeant Dan figure, seen here on the side of the building, was used to promote the product. The mill was built in 1919 and was closed in 2001 when the overseas owners shifted the operation to Australia." www.teara.govt.nz

The sounds and smells of the locally grown oats being crushed and processed into oatmeal/porridge will stay with me for ever.
