Mary, Mungo and Midge

There’s a bike shop near Sheffield that designs and sells, among other things, handlebars.  Whereas many bike companies differentiate their products by some sort of alphanumeric code - for example RMH-02 (a type of drop handle bar made by the Italian company Deda) the Yorkshire lads (and they are lads) prefer to use names.  But not just any old names.

Over the years I have had, on my various bikes, Mary bars, Mungo bars and now I’ve just fitted these Midge bars to my indoor bike.  I can’t really work out why they chose to name their products after a little girl and her dog and her mouse.  Perhaps it’s an ‘in’ joke and if you have to ask, you are most decidedly ‘not in’.

The legend ‘make sure the lift door is shut’ is a reference to the fact that Mary, Mungo and Midge lived on the top floor of a tower block.  M,M and M was broadcast on BBC1 in 1969.  In just 13 episodes it achieved cult status.  A bit like a bike shop near Sheffield.

I managed to find Blipfolio the other day by accidentally linking back to it from a previous image.  If anyone's nostalgic for the old blip, try here.  This is why I like grey.
