'The Way We Were' - Cliffe Castle Greenhouses.

Today I’m following my Blip Buddy Kathee’s example and embarking on a series.   Clever Kathee (Series – ‘The Old House’, ‘Hallowe’en’s Comin’, ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’) manages to compile her series by adding a photo a day.   Mine won’t be!   But I will be adding to it as and when.   My first series is going to be ‘The Way We Were’, and the first picture, taken today, is of the once very impressive greenhouses at Cliffe Castle, a local Victorian grandee’s house, now a museum.   Greenhouses originated in the 16 century when wealthy landowners cultivated citrus fruits to impress their contemporaries.  By Victorian times they were considered a necessary adjunct to any grand house and gardeners cultivated all sorts of exotic fruit and vegetables for the tables of the well-to-do owners.   The greenhouses at Cliffe Castle, though still intact, haven’t been used to produce fruits and vegetables for the table for a very long time, and are currently closed ‘due to ongoing renovation’.
