"Neither snow nor rain

Nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" - U.S. Postal Service motto.
Nor will they be slowed by crow-eating hawks.
This morning I was in my office when I heard someone yell "Holy shit! Don't hurt me, man!!" Thinking someone was getting mugged, I looked out my window to see a huge hawk jumping around on the steps. I grabbed my camera and ran out to find the post man at the bottom of the steps, where he had jumped when the hawk brought down the crow. He told me later that it was like someone was throwing a blanket on him. He eventually came up past the hawk, but then had to go back down with more mail. Each time the hawk eyed him up and covered his catch, but stood his ground. A few minutes later, a man came down the steps and didn't see the hawk so almost stepped on him. He decided not to pass him and went in another way, then came back out to try and scare the hawk away. I was ok with that until he started throwing stones at the hawk and landed a shot to his back. I yelled at him and he got assy (the man, not the hawk). When I said the hawk would leave when he was finished, the man said he had a business to run - but since I had a camera and I wasn't leaving either, the assy man eventually decided to just tape off the stairs and let the hawk have his meal.
When I left 2.5 hours later, the hawk was still eating. Score one for the hawk. And our intrepid post man.
