A candle for the teacher?

As the bus approached Glasgow in the thick freezing fog my thoughts turned to those whose lives have recently been marred by injury and death, both in Glasgow and on the AirAsia plane.

Coincidentally I had to go near to the scene of last Monday’s tragedy where several people were injured or killed by an out of control bin lorry.  Hundreds of flowers mark the place where the bin lorry came to a stop and in Royal Exchange Square people were standing silently, many with tears in their eyes, contemplating the tragic event as they looked at hundreds of candles and thousands of flowers.  Yesterday over a thousand people had held a vigil there for the victims.

Perhaps the young boy lighting a candle was a pupil of the teacher who was knocked down and killed.  Nearby a poignant letter paid a tribute to her mentioning the love, care and encouragement that she had given to him and his fellow pupils.

As the fog started to clear I was thinking of those who have lost a loved relative or friend and hoping that they will come out of their present foggy despair and grief and be able to face the future with renewed hope.

The last verse of a poem on a railing says

It’s time to show the world again,
how much we really care…..
by showing what we’re made of
and saying a little prayer!

With love from a Glasgow Cabbie
