John Cabot Statue

Walking around Bristol this morning I noticed this rather striking statue, seasonally decorated. Closer inspection revealed him to be John Cabot (born Giovanni Cabato) in Italy, explorer and navigator. In 1497 he set sail from Bristol in his ship The Matthew in search of Asia. He made land in Canada and claimed it for King Henry VII mistaking it for Asia.
