Snowcapped Cheviot

After yesterday, today was wonderfully sunny.  However the rain in the night froze into black ice so the roads were treacherous.  We did not need to drive to get our walk on the moor.  Here you can see Cheviot, 2,674 ft - sadly not a Corbett, as it is just on the English side of the border.  There are many routes up and at various time I've climbed quite a few - my first, aged 10, was with my parents walking in from the Bowmont Valley.  It is harder to find the summit from the Scottish side as the top is so flat.  At that time there were no paths to the top, so we had to pick our way through peat hags.   Since then the National Park has laid stone slabs leading to the summit from the Pennine Way route as the peat bog, 2 metres deep in places, was being eroded.  There are a few remains of crashed WW2 bombers which crashed up there - Mr C and some chums had a day out on a mission to find them.
