Town Church tower steps...
These are the steps we have to climb up and down to get onto the roof of the Town Church, which we then walk across and then down three steps into the ringing room, or up another spiral staircase to get to the belfry where the bells are housed. There is a further void or room between the bells and the ringing room which the ropes pass through. This is simply a safety measure in case the bell or any of the fittings come loose. We were ringing one Sunday and the clapper of the tenor sheered off. You wouldn't want that landing on your head!
It isn't easy to photograph such a narrow spiral staircase but there is another view here and this is looking up. I've never counted how many steps there are at the Town Church but not many, probably less than 50. I used to ring at Ludlow in Shropshire and there are about 150 steps there; definitely not for the unfit.
Liverpool Anglican Cathedral has a lift to take you up to the ringing room and also to the viewing area of the belfry. That is luxury!
