Boxing Day Treats
My return flight left on Christmas Day evening, arriving back home in London on Boxing Day afternoon. One of our passengers was kind enough to bring us these beautiful festive bags of goodies - each filled with a variety of sweets and chocolates. Another passenger brought us THREE boxes of See's chocolates! It always means a great deal when passengers think of us in this way, but considering the tradition and history of Boxing Day, it seemed particularly appropriate:
"The traditional celebration of Boxing Day included giving money and other gifts to charitable institutions, needy individuals, and people in service jobs. The holiday may date from the Middle Ages (A.D. 400's--1500's), but the exact origin is unknown. It may have begun with the lords and ladies of England, who presented Christmas gifts in boxes to their servants on December 26. Or it may have begun with priests, who opened the church's Alms (charity) boxes on the day after Christmas and distributed the contents to the poor."
I was very glad we landed almost an hour early and I made it to my sister's house in time to be with the whole family and indulge in her expansive Boxing Day feast of leftovers!
