Not So Trivial

We had a very relaxing day at home today with nothing planned. A long lie in the morning meant that we skipped breakfast and went straight for lunch/brunch and then Becky asked for a game of Family Trivial Pursuit, which she got as a Christmas present.

Alex was doing incredibly well to start off with and assumed his victory was just a matter of time. However, I too was doing well and had a difficult decision to make as my six pieces of pie sat in the centre of the board, i.e. do I answer this question correctly or throw the game to give Alex another chance at winning? As it is, I am not into pandering to the kids in games and allowing them to win everything as it doesn’t do them any favour to think that they can win everything: into the bargain, they can’t both win but on this occasion Becky was struggling a bit so the dilemma was not affecting her.

The dilemma changed dramatically when I was asked a multiple choice question with three possible answers but had no idea of the correct one. Consequently, I lost my guilt and had decided to go for what I considered the least likely answer, in the knowledge that I might be completely correct. However, before I got the chance to answer, Alex suggested a different answer. So a new dilemma! Do I go for my original ‘unlikely’ answer or change to Alex’s ‘much more likely’ alternative? The problem was that it could cause untold upset if I ignore him and then get to right or go with his answer, which he gave as he was trying to throw me off course.

In the end, I went with Alex’s answer - and duly won the game. Cue the tears.

Even when you win, you can’t win!
