The Return of the Light!

And so it was that after the longest night of the year, the light returned!

This is a scene that I get to see every morning on my drive to work. Sunrise begins to fill the sky with pink just as I drive past this field of hay bales, and I think about stopping for a better look. I visited the bales in mid-November when they first appeared and I have been tempted quite a few times since then to stop again. And so on this morning, I did.

There on the left is the craggy tree. Scattered through the field are the round bales (which, as I look at them, I realize they may be cornstalk bales instead of hay). The clouds and sun are waging their usual battle in the sky above our heads. On some days, the tinge of pink, or yellow, or gold that I spy in the sky at this hour is the only real sunlight I get to see for the day.

And so it is that we celebrate the return of the light. Be it just a little golden glimpse in the morning (nice) or a full-on sunny afternoon (even better), we welcome the sun and cherish the light. And we anticipate with great joy the lengthening of our days.

The tune is by Hall and Oates, When the Morning Comes.
