Mayflies

Looking out of the window at 5.30am Kat saw that the garden was completely underwater. She and G got dressed, found our wellies and went out to try and clear the culvert grid in our neighbour's garden. A difficult and dangerous task at any time, let alone in the dark as the area is completely covered by water and the drop down to the grid can't be seen. Once it is cleared of debris, the level of water in our garden goes down leaving behind a layer of sludge. Work was supposed to have been done this summer to prevent this happening!
 
The Man and I were woken up at 6am to help. I made cups of tea while the others got soaked. While all this was going on Chippy and Ash were marooned in the Dormobile on the drive, not having brought any wellies for a meal and sleep-over.
 
Having worked hard all morning, folks wanted a nice trip out, somewhere warm and dry for a cuppa. We went to Rheged where I saw these amazing mayflies. This is Katarina Prior's explanation of it:-
 
Project Mayfly is a community art project with the aim of getting as many people as possible enjoying creating art.
The project was inspired by the mayfly, a flying insect found all over the world. Mayflies are famed for their short adult life which in some species can be as short as a day, an hour or even a few minutes. Every moment is used wisely and is cherished.
I am encouraging people from all over to take a moment to decorate a mayfly. Each person is asked to think of something they cherish, could be one thing, many things, a place, a person a memory, anything! Then to write it on their mayfly, cut it out and send it to me to be added to the exhibition at The Rheged Center.


I like the way one of them says Kat on it, with her friend's name Kit on the other wing. Nothing to do with either of them! but Kat has been a big part of my day.


So! Off out again now for a meet-up with kanyl and Mrs K and a drink or two.
