For what it's worth, my strategy for the best viewing experience on a desktop screen is to reduce the width of the browser. If you keep the browser window full height but drag the edge inwards, you will see that at a certain point (it's about 850 pixels wide actually) the top menu bar collapses to a menu icon only. You should now be viewing the site in a portrait format and although it shouldn't be necessary, it does seem that the site works best that way. Only the tallest of portrait images will get the grey side bars and square or landscape images will fill the width without needing to scroll up or down. It works for me anyway.
