Big R rides the Escalator

The day began with an early trip to Seattle to try and get some more of R's retirement crap stuff done and then an enjoyable trip browsing the Pike Place Market.  That's always a visual delight as well as sensual and scrumptious smells to tease you.  We ate at the Falafel King across from an exotic dancing place advertising all sorts of body temptations for those so inclined.  We did more errands then in the evening went back into Seattle with friends to hear a program commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1914 Christmas Truce that happened during WWI.
This was an actual truce that happened naturally between the German soldiers and English soldiers in the trenches only a few feet apart from one another.  They laid down their arms and met between the trenches to share stories of home, family and the way Christmas was celebrated.  The next day it was back to killing each other...but some men were forever changed by this event.  If only they could have maintained this self induced truce and refused to fight on..... John McCutcheon, a well known folk singer , was there to sing his song called Christmas in the Trenches....link to song is here  The link may not be working and I don't know why.'
This evening  was very moving...speaking words of peace were a Christian minister, a Muslim leader, a Rabbi and a Humanist  ...afterwards we all went up and lit candles to symbolize a calling for peace...it was a beautiful coming together of all peoples.  I loved it.
