Just let it shine

This is part of The Glow Tree that is outside the Community Centre on Blackbird Leys … which is the estate I’ve lived in since December 1976. It has a pretty bad reputation and according to Oxford City Council it comes within the 10% most deprived areas in England.  But it is an amazing mixed community – our local MP still lives here (and no he doesn’t have a fancy London pad). In my Close of 14 houses, there are currently 6 people with Bachelor degrees, 2 with Masters degrees, 1 with a PhD and a Professor – all with employment (or retired from employment) appropriate to their qualifications. But that’s 5 of the 14 houses … in the other 9 there is a range of mixed education and employment or lack of it. We are all friends and chat and look out for each other.
I live in the bit of Oxford that never appears on Inspector Morse … but it’s friendly, supportive and caring … and I don’t want to live anywhere else.
