Abandoned

I have never taken part in the Derelict Thursday Challenge, as I have usually been away on a Thursday and I am not now sure whether such Challenges still exist – Are we sure about anything at the moment?

No matter! It’s a dismal day and just the time to blip a derelict building in our village.

This was a Primitive Methodist Chapel. It is at the Town Head end of the village, just at the point where the Pennine Way leaves the Appleby Road. It was built in 1839 to rival the other non-conformist chapel in the village – a Wesleyan Chapel built in 1820. (This became a private house in 1935.)

This one was abandoned in 1905 when the current Methodist Chapel was built in the village. Since then it has been used on and off as a store, but nothing has happened there for a long time now.

It was tempting to turn this into a mono picture, to suit the nature of the building and of the day, but I was actually quite intrigued by the brickwork and how the sandstone has coloured in different ways over the years. So I have left it just as it came out of the camera – dismal weather and all.
