Littlehampton
Fire has lit up the darkness for millennia, so what better way to celebrate the millennium. 31st December 1999 saw 2,800 beacons or torches being lit in Britain, stretching from the highest point of Ben Nevis down to Snowdon and then the River Thames. Lighting them began in the Scottish Highlands in late afternoon, spreading down through the country to London by around 10pm.
This beacon still stands on Littlehampton promenade. The inscription says it was lit by the Town Mayor of the time. The shield represents Littlehampton of course. You can see by the featureless sky that it was a grey gloomy day.
