Hark! The Herald

I tried, but I couldn't resist that title. It was going to be "Local Iconography, Part 1", so count yourself lucky!

Back to our normal routine today, which for me included my Silver Sneaker Cardiac Circuit class at the YWCA this morning. We were blessed with another gorgeous spring day, so I decided to blip the neon sign (red at night -- see a link in the comments) on top of the Bellingham Herald building after my Y class, with a bit of the Daylight Building, built in 1904, visible as well.

The Herald is our local daily newspaper. It began publication in 1890, and despite the current challenging economic conditions, still has a circulation of over 23,000 copies daily and more than 30,000 on Sundays.

Eight stories high, the Herald building is one of the taller buildings in downtown Bellingham (the tallest is 14 stories). Phil and I enjoyed watching the July 4th Bellingham Bay fireworks from the roof a few years ago. Only the first two floors are used by the newspaper now; other tenants rent the rest of the space.

The main activity today at home was continuing to prepare the front garden for the addition of more plants, so I'm still behind on commenting. We're hoping to wrap up the plant purchases Tuesday morning and get them in the ground over the next few days.
