Lord Matheson

This monument to Lord James Matheson is situated along one of the many trails around the campus in the Stornoway Castle Grounds. Despite what we may think of these historical personages from our current perspectives, they were pretty amazing characters. Born near Lairg, died in France, he spent most of his working life in the Far East and built a financial empire, before 'retiring' to buy the whole of the Isle of Lewis (and live here).
