Our target for the past nine days and 11 Km from the top of the Col du Tourmalet, Barèges is well known to cyclists in the Pyrenees. At Les Sorbiers, Rob and Rachel Williamson cater for skiers in the winter, cyclists in the summer and hill walkers at any other time of the year. Rob organises cycling trips in the Pyrenees throughout the year and once or twice a year he stretches to a cross France trip to Barèges. This is the third time I have been on one of his trips and this has been the best so far.
We started in Geneva nine days ago, descended the Rhone valley, traversed Provence and the Languedoc and finally ground to a halt at the point where snow blocks the road 2/3 of he way up the Col du Tourmalet.
Today was our coolest of the trip with temperatures dropping below 10'C at times. Misty throughout and wet for a time in the morning. We traversed three minor Cols before we arrived wet and tired in Lourdes, and a warm drink in the classy Terrace Cafe went down well. At Barèges a warm welcome, beers, showers, Blanquette de Limoux, Tartiflette, Gateau Basque and warm beds awaited. Oh, and a visit to see Rob's Fire Engine thrown in.
