Galgorm Castle

Galgorm Castle is a Castle near Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It was built in 1618 by Sir Faithful Fortescue, After the Fortescue family moved out the castle was sold to the English Colville Family. Alexander Colville was the man who bought the Galgorm castle, he was very wealthy when he bought the castle. But this made people suspicious of him. Colville was involved in 'black magic' and legend has it that he once used this to contact the Devil, the Devil and he appareantly met by the river maine.
Colville told the devil he was short of money, and so he and the devil agreed that the devil would go to Colville's house and fill up one of his boots with money. However in return, Colville would have to sell his soul to the devil, and would have to leave earth twenty one years afterwards.
Before the Devil arrived at Colvilles house, (Which was then a two story house). Colville got one of his boots, carried it to the top floor of his house, and cut of the heel. He then cut a hole in the floor of his bedroom (On the top floor of his house) and nailed the boot to the floor over the hole. This meant that when the devil came to fill the boot with gold, He would be tricked into filling up the entire bottom floor of colvilles house up with money, before being able to fill up the boot. According to legend, this worked, and this is how Colville got his fortune.
Colville used his fortune to buy Galgorm castle. He moved some of his family members in with him, and filled the castle with servants. Colville got some of his servants interested in black magic, and it is said that one of his servants left to live in Scotland. During her time there, a burglary took place in her town. In order to find the theif, is is said, that she summoned the devil and asked him who the burglar was, the devil told her and the burglar admitted to the crime. When she was asked where she learned such magic, she told the people that she had learnt it from Alexander Colville of Galgorm Castle.
As word spread about Colville's deal's with the devil, Colville became shunned upon, to the extent of some people even attacking him. However, Colville was not that bothered and went on with his life. Colville was however blamed for any bad luck that happened around Galgorm Castle.
After the twenty one years had past, the devil went to Galgorm Castle to take Colville away with him. When he entered Colville's room he was reading the bible next to a candle. The Devil told Colville that the time was come, and Colville asked that he be aloud to read the bible until his candle had completely burnt away. The Devil agreed, At this, it is said, Colville blew out the candle and then placed the candle in the Bible, he then shut the bible. The Devil had been tricked, since the Devil was not aloud to touch a bible, and the candle was not burnt out, He was not aloud to take Alexander Colville to hell. For this reason the devil left Colville be and never bothered him again.
Weather the legend is true or not, People still report that the ghost of Alexander Colville still haunts Galgorn Castle. His ghost is said to wonder the castle and his footsteps can be heard, And occasionaly you may even hear or see him. There is a painting of Colville in the castle, and it is rumoured that if the painting was to leave the castle, then disaster would strike.
