Layer after layer
Betty House has layers. Several layers.
There are at least 4 layers of paint that I've been removing from door frames - it's taken 3 solid days to do 3 frames, and there are 4 more. These three are probably the worst and the other 4 may have to wait a year (eg after the first renters). We call the next project 1.5 as it'll be a minor update. Rancho Gordo has a 1.5 when the current tenants are up.
But what we've found with Betty House is that although it's well presented on the surface, there are many surfaces. No one ever stripped anything down, which is what we are doing right now. Peeling off the layers.
And it goes as far as the kitchen floor. The executive decision was to put a new kitchen in (which isn't going to cost that much). So we've got nearly the whole kitchen torn out, walls are cleaned, and it's onto the flooring.
What you see here is what was beneath the tiles that have just been removed. Look carefully and there are 6 more layers! 4 layers of vinyl tile, 1 layer of plyboard, and one layer of a fibre board - which is proving a pain to remove. Currently got half of it up - dressed for war with masks and the whole nine yards.
But the real pest is that someone nailed the fibre floor every 4 inches across 80 square feet. Seriously - every 4 inches in every direction. This floor must have been structural or something. So whilst two of use strip the floor, one person is removing nails.
With any luck tomorrow we can start the rebuild of the kitchen, which will prove difficult as Dog is in the dog house, and it's going to be difficult buying kitchen cabinets with the other two vehicles.
