The Other Old Cross in Chichester
Last week, 3rd May, I blipped the historic Old Cross in the rain in Chichester. Today, also in the rain, I blipped the other Old Cross in Chichester. In the North Street pedestrian area about 500 yards from its namesake, this pub looks the part with its half timbers and roof tiles, but is not as old as it might seem - I believe it was built early in the reign of George V, 1910-1936. However it does have a couple of historic claims to fame. It has a notice on one of the ceiling beams claiming that the pub was built on Chapter land granted by King John himself, which would suggest there has been some kind of hostelry on this spot for a long time. In 1928, the pub burned down and two random dice were found in the ruins, now set into the wall for luck.
Nice traditional pub serving typical food in the heart of Chichester. Not sure if they still do them, but their chips with melted cheese and bacon bits were to die for - and would certainly give you a helping hand if you were heading in that direction, loaded with cholesterol. Gotta take a chance sometime:))
The sign in the bottom right corner is for Amelie and Friends, the coffee shop with a dining hall serving the most delicious brownies E-VER.
