Padlock

A simple Chinese padlock, meant to deter small fingers rather than deft sticky fingers. The slide on the left is pushed through a small slot and depresses a spring, this enables the lock and bar to be pulled apart. The earliest locks are known to be from the Roman era 500 BC or whatever date designation Melvyn Bragg now thinks is fashionable.
