Dogwood flowers

Dogwood is also called dagwood. It is said that in old times the very hard wood was used for making skewers, also called dags. Some claim that this is the original name of the tree, but the name "dog tree" has old roots in English. It has even been called "The Hound's tree". There are lots of different species, some of which are only shrubs. This one is probably a "Pacific dogwood", which is a floral emblem and heraldic symbol for British Columbia. The flowers come in different colours, most commonly white or pink. This time of the year, you can find trees covered with flowers. It is a popular tree for the garden.
