Heads

Absolutely fabulous day in Madeira. A wonderful island which I want to return to!! In the morning we went on a walking tour of the levadas, irrigation channels which are fairly high but each one affords level walking amongst luscious trees and amazing flora. We even saw two Firecrests and three Blackcaps.

In the afternoon we went to the colourful fruit and fish market and found incredible varieties of strange veg and fruit but also these wondrous heads of fish with the most enormously long tails. I have no idea what they are called but their large eyes possibly indicate that they frequent very deep water, such as is found around the island.

Then a magical departure with the island disappearing into the warm horizon.

Tomorrow .... The orchid gardens in Tenerife.
