Remembrance

Every year on May 4, the Dutch commemorate all those who have died in wars since World War II with two minutes of silence at 8 PM. People gather at monuments, and in particular at the national ceremony in Dam Square (Amsterdam).

The monument in this photo, not far from my house, commemorates the shooting of 29 people in 1944, in what was a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood at the time.

It is now standing amidst a sea of flowers.
