Pond dipping!!
Worked from home today while the car had its MOT. Clean bill of health thank goodness.
While checking on toadpole progress (which isn't much! no legs yet and only slghtly larger) I spotted this diving beetle so that became my blip for today!
I do have great diving beetle and dragonfly larvae but couldn't find any today. Maybe next time.
Of the family Dytiscidae, it has long hairs (natatory setae) on its legs that act very effectively as flippers. This beetle is fiercely predatory and as well as eating mosquito larvae it will also eat tadpoles!!
It breathes through its back end, carrying a bubble of air like an oxygen tank.
Fascinating stuff I hear you say! Just another little episode from Jilly's UK nature reserve!
Bet you can't wait for tomorrow.....
