Newbury

When we went to Newbury in March, we vowed to go back another day soon, and today was that day, although our round trip took in a lot of other sites. The first stop was at West Woods to see how the bluebells were coming along, the next at the Wilton Windmill. The focal point of the trip was the village of Burghclere where, after lunch at the Carpenters Arms, we went to see the Stanley Spencer paintings in Sandham Memorial Chapel NT (photography not allowed).

Originally we had planned to go to Highclere Castle but before setting off had discovered it wasn't open that day. Nevertheless we managed to sneak a quick look, surprising a deer in the process, and will go back when it is.

We discovered several new parts of Newbury during an enjoyable visit. I came across a couple of people feeding the swans and pigeons and could not resist the elegant shapes they made to share with Blip.

On the way back we saw a red kite as we drove toward Kintbury, then went on to Hungerford, Chilton Foliat and Ramsbury. Shortly after there we pulled over to look at some Highland cattle. Finally we drove above the River Kennet on Chopping Knife Lane and back through Marlborough, Manton, Lockeridge and Silbury Hill.

All in all, a very good outing.
