My Rowan
Today would have been Roald Dahls 90th birthday and Rowan was allowed to go to school dressed up as one of his characters. She chose Violet Beauregarde from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Despite my distinct lack of interest she was characteristically upbeat. 'All you have to do is make my face blue and I can wear my own clothes'. Putting on jeans and t-shirt Rowan said she was already beginning to feel in character and once her face was painted she felt the transformation complete. I on the other hand was not convinced.
Before leaving for school she asked me to take a photo of her. In that instant, raising her face to the camera, I loved her that much harder. She's a child who really lives every moment. Today, Rowan simply believed she could be Violet. And so she was.
